Introducing ‘Friends of Huayan’

Centre for Malaysian Chinese Studies, or CMCS (or ‘Huayan’ in Chinese), was founded in 1985 at the proposal of the Alliance of Fifteen Leading Chinese Guilds and Associations (State Chinese Assembly Halls, the United Chinese School Committees’ Association of Malaysia, and the United Chinese School Teachers’ Association of Malaysia). Since its establishment, CMCS has been actively collecting historical resources and conducting research on the history and culture of ethnic Chinese in Malaysia. It has published more than a hundred of academic titles in Malay, Chinese and English. It has also organised hundreds of academic salons, seminars and conferences. Additionally, Jixian Library of CMCS has collected more than a hundred thousand of books on Malaysian Chinese Studies, including publications by Chinese associations and Chinese schools, historical documentation, Mahua (Malaysian Chinese) literature, a special collection of Chinese school textbooks, as well as more than 1.6 million pieces of newspaper clippings.

CMCS is essentially an independent research organisation for the Chinese community, and at the same time, a fortress to Malaysian Chinese culture. CMCS has collected and conserved important historical documentation pertaining to Chinese community in Malaysia that records the participation of our forefathers in the struggle for independence and the development of the nation, in addition to their significant contributions in the nation’s economic progress. Besides engaging in the research and publication on the heritage, history and culture of Chinese clan associations, CMCS also holds regular meetings with scholars from various disciplines to discuss social issues, national policies and legal issues that concerns the Chinese community.

With the support of Lee Foundation, board members and alumni of Chung Ling High School and many dedicated individuals, CMCS were able to begin the construction of the David Chen Electronic Library a few years ago and officially launched the library in June 2018. Currently the collection of Malaysian Chinese research resources are being digitalised in stages for the use of local and foreign researchers.

In 2014, distinguished Malaysian lexicographer Dr Yang Quee Yee and his wife generously donated to CMCS their lifelong collection of Chinese and Malay books and materials, which is now housed in the ‘Pak Yang Quee Yee Collection’ section. It is the one and only treasury of language and cultural resources on Chinese-Malay interaction that belongs to the Chinese community, and it will certainly play an important part in promoting inter-ethnic cultural exchange in New Malaysia. The value of the special collection was acknowledged by the National Heritage Department, who had provided funding to support the maintenance of the collection.

The pursuit of academic culture is the responsibility of CMCS that has been entrusted by the Chinese community, and it can only be fulfilled if CMCS has the community’s full support.

Therefore, we sincerely invite you to be part of this journey by joining ‘Friends of Huayan’, You would be supporting us in our mission in preserving Malaysian Chinese cultural heritage and promoting academic culture. Together we could ensure the growth of Malaysian Chinese Studies.
